Undara Lava Tubes

On the way to the 40 Mile Scrub we had seen several references to the Undara Lava Tubes, however didn’t know much about them, therefore the next morning we set out to find out what they were all about. When we arrived we found a thriving tourist operation http://undara.com.au/ revolving around ancient tubes created by lava flows.

We booked ourselves into a two hour tour and found the formations fascinating. The set up itself is really well done with a range of tours, accommodation options and night time activities. Virtually the entire set of facilities have been fashioned from historic rail carriages to give it even more atmosphere. By the time we had finished here it was time to move on and find a place to stay for a few days, which ended up being the O’Brien’s Creek Camping Ground.

This campsite (as opposed to caravan park – it offers showers etc but no power) is set up to accommodate people looking  to fossick for Topaz at the nearby O’Brien’s Creek fossicking grounds.
